Guest Blog - Best Wine Tasting and Happy Hour Spots in Sydney

Thursday, April 20, 2017

If you are passionate about wine, you love it and you are a connoisseur of it, wine tastings are probably the best night out (or date night) options for you. If, on the other hand, you have had a grueling day at the office (or perhaps a great one), there is no better place to unwind, or celebrate a success than going for drinks at a great bar, and it is even better if it is during happy hour. Whichever your preference is, we have created a list of the best places in Sydney, and if you are a fan of both wine and happy hour, keep reading and discover your new favorite places.

Wining and wining

One of the best wineries is definitely The Winery, and the best time to head there is on Wednesdays at six pm, as that is the time when the event called Vino Vacation kicks off. As they claim, this is not a place for snobs, so even if you just love one but are not ‘highly educated’ on the subject, you will feel right at home, and six pm is just the perfect time to treat yourself to a great glass or two, right after work. It has a range of wines to choose from, so in case you do not have a favorite one yet, this is the perfect place to find it.

One of Sydney’s latest wine and cheese hotspots is the Handpicked Cellar Door. The place takes the concept of cellar to an entirely new level, being decorated with exposed brick and fermenting wine tanks. If you are a wine neophyte, this is completely ok, as you can get educated by interactive iPad experience or go deep with 30-minute tutorials and tastings. The place has a tasting station, a lounge area where you can enjoy a glass of great wine and perhaps a little something from the menu to match. There is also a quite interesting-looking experience room, surrounded by steel wine tanks, which is perfectly suited for group tastings and small intimate events. If however, larger gatherings for wine lovers is what you are looking for, Cellar Door is here for you with options for large group bookings. As you can see, the HCD has a little something for every taste and sensibility, which makes it the perfect spot for those who enjoy a nice glass of wine and charcuterie as well as true wine connoisseurs.

Another amazing winery on our list is the Urban Winery. This place has a cellar door and a wine bar where you can try their wines by the glass, bottle or just buy them to take home. What makes this winery exquisite is the fact that they offer the possibility of book a blend-your-own wine masterclass, so if you are looking for a chance to not just learn about wine, but actually make your own blend, this is the place to be. Just make sure to check the dates on their website as this experience is not in offer that frequently.

Putting the happy back into happy hour

Happy hour is the best; you can have a couple of drinks with your pals, share some good laughs, celebrate something, and  perhaps even meet someone and do a bit of flirting – and all of that at some seriously great prices.

If you are looking for your perfect happy hour in Sydney, the first on your list should be Blackbird Café. Here, one hour is actually three, as the happy hour time is from three to six pm.  Enjoy great cocktails concocted by professional bartenders, or choose your favorite glass of wine and beer. The best part – the café offers lunch specials until 5pm every day, so you do not have to drink on an empty stomach. The additional incentive: every Friday, Saturday and Sunday there is great music brought to you by a great DJ, so if you want to dance the night away, this place says come in!

In case you like your drinks with a side of live music or even a bit of comedy on grueling Mondays, Café Lounge will surely put a smile on your face. The happy hours are from 5-7pm, and aside from great and cheap drinks, and you can get a bite to eat as this café also serves pizza and burgers! With a combination of pizza and beer you can forget Disneyland, this is the happiest place on Earth. As for live music, you might want to stick around even after the happy hour is over because it kicks off at seven every Wednesday.

In your pursuit of a theme bar, head down to The Rabbit Hole and you will most definitely experience the Alice in Wonderland vibe. Besides the great thematic ambiance, the happy hour here lasts from four-thirty to six pm, and this funky basement bar also serves up some of the city’s best cuisine. If the combination of fantastic food and cheap drinks is not enough to get you to visit the Rabbit Hole, perhaps their signature Kraken’s Prey cocktail (which they claim is so good it is almost addictive) will do the trick.
